Junction 56 Distillery It’s summer 2012, and Mike Heisz attends a whisky tasting in his hometown of Stratford.  After a few samples, he leaned over to his friend and said “we should make a barrel of whisky in my garage”.  And so, began the idea for the distillery.  After taking a leap of faith to pursue his passion, Junction 56 opened its doors in September 2015. What makes Junction 56 unique? They keep it local!  All of their spirits start with 100% Ontario-grown grains. The corn for their moonshine, and wheat for their vodka and gin, come directly from Mike’s cousin’s farm. They mill all of their own grain on-site so they know exactly what is in their products.  The name Junction 56 pays homage to the history of Stratford. The city was originally a railway town and the distillery, located in a former 100-year-old lumber yard, has one main railway line running directly behind it and the other a block in front. The junction of these two major railway lines was built in 1856 and Stratford was built up around this industry. Trains still run by the distillery every day. Junction 56 can be purchased directly from their website , or found at select LCBO locations. The Love Stratford Box includes a recipe for their Gin 56 cocktail and a few other tasty bevies to mix up at home.

Stratford Chefs School Nestled in the heart of Stratford, the Stratford Chefs School is a not-for-profit career college focused on the innovative, hands-on training of high-quality, aspiring chefs and culinary entrepreneurs. Since 1983 the School has helped to set the standard for excellence in culinary training in Canada, and produced graduates who contribute to the development of a distinctive Canadian cuisine. Between October and March each year, Stratford’s most cherished culinary secret is the School’s Dinner Series. Students rotate through kitchen positions to produce new menus daily in an upscale restaurant featuring local seasonal ingredients. Under the guidance of the School’s faculty of acclaimed local chefs and guest chefs from Canada and around the world, their students produce dishes worthy of the world’s best restaurants.  Chef and instructor, Eli Silverthorne, has selected a Classic Tourtière recipe – including instructions for pastry and red pepper condiment. You will also receive a link to an Open Kitchen @Home instructional video from Chef Eli Silverthorne.

Inspired by Stratford’s Arts & Culture

Stratford Festival We can’t think of anything more iconic than the beloved Stratford Festival. When the railway industry pulled out of Stratford in the early 1950’s, journalist Tom Patterson had an idea to breathe new life into his native city’s economy: a festival of Shakespearean Theatre. The Festival was legally incorporated in 1952.  One year later, on the night of July 13, 1953, the first season was launched, and the rest as they say is history. The Stratford Festival is a true icon to Stratford and loved by locals and visitors coming from across the globe. Each year, thousands of theatre-lovers patiently await the new playbill, carefully choosing their favourites and planning their trip to Stratford to become immersed in the arts. While the Stratford Festival wasn’t able to take the stage in 2020, they launched STRATFEST@HOME . A genius idea to bring the Festival into your home. The digital subscription includes exclusive content, delivered weekly. Treasures from their film library, intimate musical concerts, spontaneous Shakespeare riffs, and more!  We have amazing news: included in your Love Stratford Box is a 3-month subscription to enjoy STRATFEST@HOME!

The company was founded in Stratford in 1996, led by the entrepreneurial and artistic vision of one woman – Diana Olsen. Proudly Canadian, Balzac’s has 15 distinct and beloved locations across Ontario. In doing so, each café has carved out a unique personality as a central gathering place for the locals to converse, share, ruminate and create. We’re sharing with you one of two custom printed coffee mugs featuring the classic Stratford café print or the retro Est. 1996 edition to commemorate when it all started in Stratford.
