Dark Light

WORKSHOP: Eco-Printing on Natural Fabrics with Julia Masci

Join Guelph-based artist Julia Masci at Riverwalk Commons and learn the basics of eco-printing and bundle dyeing using local leaves, plants, and historical dye plants.

You will create and take home 3 fat quarters (18″ x 21″) hemp/organic cotton blend pieces dyed using 3 different eco-printing techniques.

We will cover:

• A brief history of natural dyes, bundle dyeing and eco-printing.
• The process of preparing plant (cellulose) based fibers for best results, scouring, mordanting and the use of modifiers.
• What makes a leaf print and how to use iron & tannins to create darker prints.
• The ethics of foraging and gathering locally, growing your own dye/printing plants and some of the best places to get leaves that print well!
• How to care for your plant-based fabrics. You will leave the day with the essential knowledge on how to print fabrics with plants as well as a deeper appreciation for the plants surrounding us! There will be hand-outs, outlining techniques and information that we go over, so you can continue experimenting at home.

Included:
• All the fabric, dyes and dried leaves and flowers for you to experiment with.
• 2 fat-quarter pieces of hemp/organic cotton blend muslin, medium weight. (each approx. 18×21″)
• 1 fat quarter piece of hemp/organic cotton blend muslin, light weight. (each approx. 18×21″)
• Lunch and refreshments throughout the day are provided. Supplies for you to bring:
• Comfy clothes you are not afraid to get a little messy or an apron.
• I will have medical gloves available for use, but if you have sensitive skin, or allergies, I suggest bringing a pair you know will work for you.
• Bring a notebook and pen for notetaking.
• Bring outdoor shoes and dress for the outdoor weather as we will have a walk along the river to forage some local wild plants that are good for eco-printing.

We will have about 60 -90 minutes for lunch and a walk, while our bundles cook!
