Season Opener: Dvorak Cello Concerto

Oct. 1, 2022 | Season Opener

William Rowson, conductor
Daniel Hass, cello

Rowson   Fanfare
Schubert  Symphony No. 8 in b minor ‘Unfinished’ D759
Dvorak  Cello Concerto in b minor, op.104

This spectacular concert opens the season with a brilliant new work by SSO’s Principal Conductor and Music Director, William Rowson. Our audiences know William is a versatile conductor in demand across Canada but may not know that his compositions have been performed by ensembles across Canada and abroad.

Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony is one of his most recognizable and tuneful works. Although only two movements long, it is considered a ‘perfect’ Romantic period composition.

The concert ends with Dvorak’s massive (impressive) Cello Concerto, one of the most performed works in the repertoire. Featuring some of Dvorak’s most heartfelt, emotional material it takes a virtuoso to play this work and the SSO is proud to present the young Israeli-Canadian cellist, Daniel Hass. Daniel has won many competitions, including the Stulberg International String Competition, the Canada Council for the Arts Michael Measures Prize, the Juilliard Cello Concerto Competition, and the 2021 Sylva Gelber Music Foundation award. He has performed as recitalist and chamber musician in Amsterdam, Lisbon, Tel Aviv, Budapest, Montreal, and across the United States and is also a busy composer and recording artist. Don’t miss his recital at Cows & Classics, Sep 25, 2022!

Location: Avondale United Church, 194 Avondale Ave, Stratford, ON N5A 6N4.
