THE MAGIC FLUTE
The sparkling and universally beloved opera by Mozart transports us to a land of fantasy where Tamino, lost in a wood, is asked to rescue an abducted princess – aided by a Magic Flute of miraculous powers.
“Some say that it’s all hieroglyphic,
And the symbols Freemason-specific.
Since I’m not of that sect,
They may be correct,
But it’s fun. And the music’s terrific.”
Noel Petty
January 27 (pt 1) and February 3 (pt 2)
RINALDO
While in London in 1711, Handel composed Rinaldo in record time for the Queen’s Theatre (Haymarket), completing it in two weeks. In addition to new material, he drew on many works written earlier during his years in Italy. A great success, it became the most frequently performed of his operas during his lifetime. But after a revised version was presented in 1731, Rinaldo was ignored for more than 200 years, a lapse difficult to understand considering its wealth of wonderful music. Best known is the exquisite aria “Lascia ch’io pianga“, often sung alone as a concert piece.

CINDERELLA
Already an accomplished composer, violinist, pianist, and conductor, the astonishing English prodigy Alma Deutscher completed the first version of Cinderella at the age of 10. It has since been performed to much acclaim and cheering full houses on three continents. Those fortunate enough to attend Alma’s breathtaking recital at Koerner Hall (Toronto) in April, 2018 (when she was 13) heard brief excerpts from Cinderella, Alma playing the orchestral score on the piano while ‘conducting’ the soprano and tenor in the lead roles.
