January 9 (part 1) & 16 (part 2)
SAMSON et DELILA
Camille Saint-Saëns
After being rejected in Paris, Samson et Delila had its premiere in Weimar in 1877, in a German translation. Drawing on the well-known biblical story, the score dramatizes lust, seduction, betrayal, and the violent, inescapable conclusion. Saint-Saëns followed classical models and their sense of form, resisting the influence of Wagner.
January 23
THE RITE OF SPRING
Igor Stravinsky
The ballet’s first performance, in 1913 in Paris, was most unconventionally choreographed by Nijinsky, and is famously said to have ignited a near-riot. Now frequently performed as a challenging and popular orchestral concert piece as well, it has taken its place in history as a work that revolutionized 20th-century musical composition. For Stravinsky, the piece represented “pagan Russia”, and celebrated the creative power of spring.

January 30 (part 1) & February 6 (part 2)
IL PURITANI
Vincenzo Bellini
Il Puritani is the last opera Bellini wrote, and regarded by many as the peak of his musical accomplishments. He died at the age of 33, only a few months after its premiere in 1835. It is filled with glorious melodic invention at Bellini’s highest level of refinement and evolution of his art.
