DIE FLEDERMAUS
Johann Strauss II
Premiered in 1874 Vienna and popular ever since, this lively operetta derives its story line from a French vaudeville play staged two years earlier, in turn loosely based on an 1851 German farce by Benedix. It is set in Vienna. Everyone comes to the Prince’s glorious ball in Act 2; the mood in Act 3, at the prison, is only slightly less scandalous.

CARMINA BURANA
with David Stones and Kelly Walker
Carl Orff
Composer and educator Carl Orff first encountered the 13th-century Carmina Burana (or Songs of Beuren) in 1934, in their English translations. The originals (in Latin, German, and mediaeval French) probably came from a group of poets and musicians connected to an Austrian Abbey. They celebrate the earthier pleasures of drink, nature, and lust. From over 1,000 songs, Orff chose 24 for his 1937 ‘scenic cantata’.

Cecilia Bartoli has committed considerable time and energy in recent years to reviving and performing the lost repertoire of the early 18th century Italian castrati, wonderfully virtuosic music to which she brings the entire range of her own vocal artistry.

L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA
Claudio Monteverdi
This was Monteverdi’s last opera – first performed in 1643 in Venice, revived in 1651 in Naples, then lost for over 200 years. Poppea was the mistress of the Roman Emperor Nero; the opera relates the story of how she achieved her grand ambition to be crowned empress.
