CARMEN
Georges Bizet
Opera’s best-known, quintessential tragic heroine, Carmen is referred to in the title of a 2011 book by Jean Lacouture as “femme fatale et femme libre”. But he says her struggle to free herself from a commonplace life leads her to “a death she seems to have chosen”.
October 25
SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE
Hector Berlioz
Daydreams, passions; A ball; Scene in the countryside; March to the scaffold; Dream of a witches’s sabbath.
In five compelling movements, Berlioz weaves an opera-like story of a young artist’s emotional and spiritual journey while in the throes of a hopeless love – and of his attempts to cope with frustration and sorrow through the poison of opium.
November 1 & 8
MADAME BUTTERFLY
Giacomo Puccini
Surely the most heart-rending and painful depiction of betrayal in all of opera is this musical masterpiece. In Nagasaki, US Navy Lt Pinkerton marries 15-year-old Cio-Cio San (aka Madame Butterfly), but has no intention of honouring his commitment. She bears his child after he has deserted her, and waits hopelessly for years – till he returns with an American wife and a plan to take her son from her. We’ll see the 1995 film version made by Frédéric Mitterrand.
November 15
