INNERchamber: Then & Always
Sometimes we just love to play string quartets. It’s what we dreamed of as we envisioned our lives as serious musicians and it is a love that has remained in us through the decades of our professional careers.
This concert features two quartets steeped in tradition as we celebrate Julie Baumgartel, who has been a member of INNERchamber since the beginning.
Mozart’s ingenuity is legendary; yet while his string quartets are certainly fresh and expressive, they owe much to the influence of Joseph Haydn. Mozart’s use of older forms and an elegant motivic efficiency both paid homage to Haydn and presaged the arrival of Beethoven, another of the Master’s devotés.
Not so much later, Felix Mendelssohn composed his exuberant and youthful quartet op. 44 no. 3. As with much of Mendelssohn’s output, it brilliantly blends together fresh originality with a warm regard for tradition.
