Expect delays but road will not be closed. Hwy 7 detour is suggested as above, if there is an overlap.

Hwy 8 between Stratford and Shakespeare: In progress

Beginning in early June, stretches of this road between the west end of Shakespeare and the east end of Stratford will be reduced on weekdays to a single lane, with flag people controlling traffic in both directions. Delays may be lengthy, so please allow additional time for your trip. (Both lanes are expected to be open on evenings and weekends.)

Fall Family Hike with The Avon Trail

First 45th Anniversary Late Fall Family Hike on the Stratford Side Trail/Main Trail junction, rain or shine 1:30 pm - 4 pm

Distance: 4 km Pace: Medium Terrain: Easy Duration: 3 hours

Meeting: Rd. 111 at the bridge over Avon River, about ½ km north of Hwy 7/8 (43.376262,-80.937814).  Home Hardware is at the corner of Rd. 111 and Hwy 7/8. 

Time:  1:30 pm. The hike will be approximately 1.5 hrs.  Car shuffle will be used.

Hike Route Overview:  This hike begins near the east end of the Stratford Side Trail and includes a canopied walk along the Avon River beside crop land.  It junctions with the main Avon Trail where it passes through a mature woodlot, then through the Little Lakes Valley to the Forest Motel and Woodland Retreat.  Apart from one descent, it is mostly flat terrain.   All are welcome from grandkids to seniors and everyone in between.  This is the first of nine Family hikes celebrating the Avon Trail’s 45th anniversary year. Refreshments will be served at the end of the hike. 

Recommendations:  Dress in layers, and appropriately for the weather forecast.  Good supportive walking shoes or boots recommended.  Mitts and toque may be needed depending on the weather.  Walking poles are optional.
