Event Time: 8 pm - 9 pm
Host: Hermione Presents ~ SpringWorks: indie theatre&arts festivals
Standing on Leaves is a post-apocalyptic story that unpacks Canadian intercultural experiences. The piece was devised by a team of facilitators who gathered thoughts and perspectives from residents of Toronto aged 9-18 through interviews and workshops and wove them into a single narrative. This semi-verbatim approach has lead to a dialogue that reflects the under-heard voices within our community.
In the story, the last five children on earth come to life after a wave of destruction. These children come from different backgrounds, have varying beliefs, and are responsible for sharing and reforming the land that remains. How can Canadians with cultural differences come together geographically and socially? How can we collaborate to create an inclusive identity? Through their stories and discussions, the audience will be challenged to assess our current union of cultures and contribute to shaping and reconciling Canada’s intercultural identity.
Standing on Leaves investigates perspectives on Canada’s history as a place of economic migration, refuge, colonization and conquest. It disassembles the push and shove that has occurred on this land while different groups fight for space.
Standing on Leaves (Work in Progress: Staged) - In this new play based on interviews with youth in Ontario, the world as we know it has been destroyed and the last five children must learn to share what land remains.
