Controlled Damage is a work in progress about Viola Desmond. On November 8, 1946 Viola Desmond was a driving to Sydney, Nova Scotia to sell her beauty products when her car broke down in New Glasgow. To kill time while her car was being repaired, and unaware of the Jim row rules in town, she sat in the whites only section of movies theatre where she was violently removed by the theatre owner and policeman. Spending a night in jail and being charged with defrauding the province of one cent Viola Desmond was changed forever. She was not an activist and only wanted to continue being an entrepreneur and business owner but the civil rights movement was still 10 years off and her insistence in fighting the charges against her made her unpopular with some, including her husband. This play takes different perspectives on what her experiences may have been like and how she was perceived by her peers, black and white. 71 years later the narrative has changed and, not only is she being hailed as a hero and an activist but, she will be the first Canadian woman on the 10 dollar banknote. When Sam Cooke sang a change gonna come he had no idea ....
