Doors Open Stratford Requests Community Assistance to Mark 70 Years since end of WWII in 2015

Stratford, ON: In 2015 it will be 70 years since the end of WWII and as our theme for Doors Open on Saturday, June 6, we would like to visit buildings and sites that relate to this historic event in Stratford along with key activities that took place during that time period. This is an important way for us to remember and honour those who fought to bring us the freedom we continue to enjoy in Canada today. The committee is looking for buildings and sites willing to welcome visitors for one day. In addition, we are eager to include homes built in the mid-1940s, especially in the Glastonbury Drive area, a new subdivision at that time. We are also interested in artifacts and art items that could be displayed during the weekend.

"Remembering our heritage is important. With such significant sites in Stratford as our cenotaph designed by Canadian sculptor, W. S. Allward who also designed the memorial at Vimy Ridge and the Dutch memorial, a gift from Holland, the Doors Open committee is honoured to share the stories behind these sites during this popular event." states Ernestine McKenna, Doors Open committee chair.

Doors Open Stratford is one of more than 50 communities across Ontario organizing special events inviting people to visit local heritage sites and learn about the history. The Doors Open committee works closely with Stratford Tourism Alliance to bring Stratford's heritage to life during a one-day free event on the first Saturday in June (June 6, 2015) as a part of our annual Heritage Weekend celebrations. The public is invited into spaces often not open to the public as volunteers share the stories. In 2014, more than 3,400 site visits to 14 different locations were recorded, a 40% increase over 2013.

If you are interested in participating and have something to share, please send your suggestions to Ernestine McKenna, committee chair memckenna@sympatico.ca or Cathy Rehberg at Stratford Tourism Alliance crehberg@visitstratford.ca or call 519-271-5140. We would appreciate receiving your ideas by November 30, 2014 and welcome any volunteers interested in assisting.
