Walk Together Children with Denise Williams & Friends - SpringWorks: indie theatre & arts festival
Event Date: Sunday Oct. 22nd, 2017
Event Time: 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Host: Hermione Presents ~ SpringWorks: indie theatre & arts festival
Singer Denise Williams has been building bridges between the African-Canadian and Jewish communities for over two decades with her concerts combining Black and Jewish music. She feels a deep affinity in the historic struggles of both peoples and in their music as well. In each case, their songs carry the suffering they have endured, together with hope, faith and the saving grace of humour.
This theatrical musical mashup offers joyful songs of celebration, and songs of wistfulness and inspiration, expressing the roots and aspirations of the diversity of cultures, threaded through collected stories and memories. Spirituals, West Indian and songs in English, Creole, and African languages share the program with Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew numbers, and highlights of the American opera and music theatre stages. Joining Denise will be her long-time collaborative pianists Brahm Goldhamer and Nina Shapilsky, as well as drummer/percussionist, Sam Donkoh.
The program features folk songs, songs of love and passion, songs of freedom and deliverance, including Spirituals such as the title song and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, West Indian and African songs, Yiddish folk songs (Yam Lid, Drei Sich Milechl and many more), Ladino and Hebrew songs, and Highlights of the American opera/music theatre (Gershwin, Kurt Weill).
