The Portrait by Susan Padveen - SpringWorks: indie theatre & arts festival

Chicago director Susan Padveen’s provocative play The Portrait renders a portrait of Gustav Klimt, the famous Viennese painter of the Woman in Gold, the Kiss, and the Portrait of Emilie Floge, as he tries to gain control of love and livelihood in a world that does not yet recognize his genius.

Klimt’s life, despite his struggle to hide it, is conflicted, as the man who broke boundaries with his one-of-a-kind murals, sketches, and paintings must constantly compromise his values to survive in a callous world. In this one-man tour de force, we meet Klimt as he gets to know a potential client in his studio, struggling to win her commission as his mind wanders to matters of the heart which may change his life forever. Actor Matt Maxwell reveals how Klimt’s creative panic transformed into the Golden Period that became his signature style.

‚ÄčThe Portrait (A Reading) - The story of renowned painter Gustav Klimt as he wrestles with his demons while attempting to secure a commission from a woman of Viennese society.
